Artist Evelyn Brumwell holds an BFA from The Maryland Institute and a MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art where she studied painting. For over 17 years she raised alpacas and explored all aspects of the fiber, from spinning art yarns, felting, and hand painting the fibers. She is now retired from ranching and farming so she can enjoy working as a fiber artist. She has discovered that there is more than function in creating works that are wearable and found that the form can be creative and exciting. She has developed a line of headwear, wraps, and scarves using various felting techniques with alpaca, and other natural fibers.
Many of the hats are made from a pattern that she designed and other hats and scarves are made with free form felting that allows the design to develop as she works the piece. All felt is either in natural colors or her hand dyed fibers and silk. she is inspired by ethnic and traditional designs in headwear as well as theatrical costumes.
Each piece is created one at a time letting the alpaca felt/fiber take a shape expressing its color and texture. All her hats are functional and fun to wear. She is also a painter and at the present time working on a group of collage pieces.
